A. Donor-Advised Funds
WHAT IS A DONOR-ADVISED FUND (DAF)?
A Donor-Advised Fund is the fastest-growing giving method and a simple, tax-efficient and flexible way to support the causes you care about. A DAF is a charitable giving account established at a public foundation, known as a DAF provider. When you make a charitable contribution of cash, stocks, securities or other assets to the DAF, you receive an immediate tax receipt from your DAF provider. From there, you can recommend grants to charities like KARN. Many Canadian donors use DAFs to give strategically, manage tax planning and simplify their philanthropic giving. If you don’t already have a DAF, we suggest you contact GiveWise.
HOW TO GIVE THROUGH YOUR DAF
1. Log in to your DAF account
Access your Donor-Advised Fund through your DAF provider’s online portal or contact them directly for assistance.
2. Recommend a grant to KARN
Search for Kneehill Addiction Recovery Network Society in your DAF portal and recommend a grant. You may choose to make an unrestricted gift or designate your support to a specific program. Unrestricted gifts allow KARN to respond quickly to the most urgent needs, ensuring your support has the greatest possible impact.
3. Provide our legal details
Your DAF provider may need the following information to process your grant:

WHAT ARE SECURITIES?
Securities are investment instruments that are bought and sold in the market. They include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other instruments.
BENEFITS OF DONATING SECURITIES
Reduce Capital Gains Taxes In most cases, donating appreciated stocks, mutual funds or stock options means you pay no tax on the capital gains. Or save your charitable tax credits for future tax returns within 5 years of the transaction.
Instant Tax Receipts You receive the charitable tax receipt for the market value on the date the security is received by our broker.
By donating shares directly, you get a larger tax credit and also give more to KARN. (Learn more)
